Do Chipmunks Eat Birds? {Or Do They Only Eat Nuts??}

July 21, 2022 By David

Due to the influence of popular culture, most people tend to think of chipmunks as small, cute, and harmless animals. After all, we’ve grown up with cartoon characters like Alvin (of “Alvin and the Chipmunks” fame) or Chip and Dale (from the old Disney cartoons of the same name).

In some ways, we have been conditioned to think of these creatures as gentle acorn-hunters who would never hurt anything. However, all is not as it seems. Let’s address the issue by answering a simple question: “Do chipmunks eat birds?”

Are Chipmunks and Ground Squirrels the Same?

July 13, 2022 By David

At first glance, the title of this article might seem to be rather silly. After all, squirrels and chipmunks are two different animals, right? Although that is technically true, things aren’t quite as simple as that.

It is actually quite easy to confuse ground squirrels with chipmunks, and many people have made this mistake. There isn’t a simple division between one and the other, however. The difference between these animals is mainly a matter of taxonomy: That is to say, it’s all in the names.

Have you ever wondered what animals eat chipmunks?

Chipmunks are eaten by predatory mammals (foxes, wolves, coyotes), aerial predators (hawks, owls) and some species are actively hunted by snakes. Chipmunks have developed a communication system that helps them warn each other about the presence of a predator and whether the treat is on the ground or in the air.

[Surprise!] How Many Chipmunks Live In A Burrow?

September 14, 2019 By David

Have you ever stumbled across a chipmunk’s burrow system? Given how extensive these things can be, you probably assumed that chipmunks follow some kind of joint family structure where they live together in their burrows. At least that’s what I thought until a quick search on chipmunks and their living habits told me otherwise.

How Many Chipmunks Live In A Burrow

Some of the results of my search were ambiguous at best, but here’s what I found out when I dug into the question, “How many chipmunks live in a burrow?”

Research indicates that, except for when a mother is raising her babies, only one chipmunk lives in a burrow.

Do Chipmunks Bury Nuts? They Have Serious Nut Storage Game!!

September 13, 2019 By David

When I was growing up in Kentucky I always had a ton of fun watching the chipmunks grabbing bird seed that had spilled from the feeders.  These little guys are the smallest member of the squirrel family and share a lot of behaviors with their larger cousins, the grey and red squirrels.

Tree squirrels do not hibernate to get through the winter and instead rely upon stored food to get through the winter.  However, most chipmunks perform a modified form of hibernation which made me wonder if they go through the trouble of storing up winter food caches.

So, the question of the day is, “Do chipmunks bury nuts?”
