The Sounds of Nature Sometimes Suck
“Feed the Birds!”
“It will be relaxing!”
“Enjoy the sounds of Nature!”
One of the “Sounds of Nature” that entered my life after I started putting out lots of feeders was the sound of rats scurrying around in my attic.
Want to know a really crappy way of waking up in the morning? Rolling over, grabbing a pillow and hearing the “scratch, scratch, scratch” of rats running around directly over your head.
When I initially put out my feeders I had them all located right beside our screened back porch. It was nice to have a ton of birds surrounding us as we enjoyed coffee on a Saturday morning. No need for binoculars when the birds are just a few feet away.
I hadn’t thought about spillage.
I hadn’t realized that all of the seeds that the squirrels were throwing onto the ground would attract an army of rats.
And once the army of rats was right beside my house they decide to find little holes and work their way into our attic.
I will spare you the details but suffice it to say that getting the rats out of our attic was expensive, gory and nasty.
And now I have all of my feeders at LEAST 50 feet away from my house.
I am still seeing rats eating spilled sunflower seeds but they are sticking close to the edges of the woods.
The rats are even getting into my platform feeder and pooping while the eat the peanuts.
I take shots at the rats with a pellet rifle. I always miss but it makes me feel good.
