Last month my wife an I took a few well deserved days off and headed down to the Bahamas to recharge our batteries.
We ended up on Green Turtle Cay and stayed at the Bluff House Beach Resort and Marina. The Bluff House was an interesting place. The Wi-Fi was spotty and the hot water was almost non-existent. The view from our room was so incredible we didn’t care that the infrastructure was goofy.
I had been preparing to do lots of exotic bird watching when I got to the island. We were in the Abaco region and the prospects of seeing some exotics was pretty exciting.
Although we had missed a recent birding festival I figured the birds didn’t know the dates and were probably still hanging around.
Birding is a funny thing.
One of the things I love the most about the pursuit is that Nature is always teaching me lessons. I had fully intended to go to the Bahamas to be enthralled by exotics in their natural habitat.
My favorite birds on the island were the chickens. Momma hens, baby chicks and Big Daddy Roosters were running free all over the island and it was beautiful.
Know what I loved even more than the chickens?
Curly tailed lizards. They were huge and all over the place!
You know, if I was a chicken on that island I think I would spend all my time running around and pecking curly tail lizards.
Yeah, I know…not much of a birding report and not the best pictures.
That’s okay with me. We had a wonderful time.
